British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
